The Gettysburg address was one of the most important speeches of the Civil War. Abraham Lincoln was able to use the speech as a symbol of hope to give it to the people who lost theirs. He also stated the principles of human equality contained in the Declaration of Independence and connected the Civil War to the desire for "a new birth of freedom."
