Officers responded to a report of an armed robbery at the BP gas station on New Bern Ave. David Tylek Atkinson stole cash and tobacco products. When officers arrived, witnesses pointed them in the direction where Atkinson had run. When officers approached Atkinson, gunfire was exchanged, and one police officer was wounded along with Atkinson, who was killed. A handgun, cigarettes and cash reportedly were on the ground beside him.
