Though religion remained a defining ideological force in the British colonies in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the Enlightenment also reached the so called New World, and its influence in the British colonies would provide a philosophical foundation for the American Revolution. The Enlightenment politics of British philosopher John Locke, for example, emphasized individual rights and the social contract theory of government, inspiring American leaders like Thomas Jefferson to move away from monarchy and promote a government “for the people and by the people.”
