On 12 March 1913, the Governor General’s wife, Lady Denman, officially announced Canberra as Australia's newly formed capital city. The construction of Canberra began during World War 1, however, its development was often delayed because of both World Wars. Canberra was originally planned to home 25,000 people however today, it is home to around 400,000 Australian Citizens. Canberra is a man-made city designed by Walter Burley Griffin. An international design competition was held to find the right look and feel for the national capital. In the end, Walter Burley Griffin owned the winning design.
