Federation was the first day Australia was Australia. Before Federation, Australia was six different countries with seperate defence forces, post, transport and colonies. It was hard to live this way, so in 1857, the government had convention and discussed the idea to join all the six colonies (the states) to unite as one country. Unfortunately, not all six states agreed to this. Western Australia and Queensland were against Federation because of the financial costs, uneven distribution of power, immigration, loss of colonial identities and distance between colonies. In the end, Australia did become one proud nation, with one flag.
