Andrew Clarke (born 1957, age 63) is Professor of Cognitive Philosophy at the University of Sussex. He has also taught philosophy, ethics and cognitive science at several other universities in the UK.
Clark is one of the founding members of the CONTACT collaborative research project whose aim is to investigate the role environment plays in shaping the nature of conscious experience.
Clark's papers and books deal with the philosophy of mind and he is considered a leading scientist in mind extension. He has also written extensively on connectionism, robotics and the role and nature of mental representation.
Clark is perhaps most well known for his work on the extended mind thesis, which says that the mind extends into the environment.
A lot of Clarkes work has reference to artificial intelligence and how AI can be used to find out more about oneself. He also bases a lot of his work around the environment and comments on how the environment influences the mind.
Action (or action-oriented predictive processing) play an important role in Clark's account as another means by which the brain can reduce prediction error by directly influencing the environment. To this, he adds "personal, affective, and hedonic" factors would be implicated along with the minimisation of prediction error, creating a more nuanced model for the relationship between action and perception.
Clarke has written 7 books about his studies of philosophy, ethics, psychology and the mind and is also on the editorial board for 7 journals about cognitive, connection and behavioural brain sciences, as well as philosophy and society.
