23 feb 1868 año - W.E.B. Du Bois Born

Descripción:

Published influential book, The Souls of Black Folk in 1903 - much greater impact than any of Washington’s writings. Took a less accommodationist line than Washington, who he criticised. The distinction between Du Bois and Washington were later mirrored in the 1960s by Martin Luther King and Malcolm X. Du Bois firmly believed in equality and integration and used more idealistic and emotive rhetoric than Washington.

Believed there should be a ‘talented tenth’ – an African American elite that would lead a movement for radical political changes and lead African Americans to social and political equality and integration.

Cooperated with white reformers in the NAACP and led marches and campaigns for equal civil and political rights. Appalled by lynching’s and spoke passionately against them. Visited inner-city slums and saw the problems there such as the social problems, alcohol abuse, poverty, prostitution and poor housing and health.

Although Du Bois accepted that there had been progress for blacks in America, he was not satisfied; President Wilson introduced segregation in federal bureaus, lynching and violence continued unabated and there were race riots in 1917 and 1919. Shifted his attention to the need to publicise civil rights through the press and organisation, but his radicalism led him interests to shift to international-affairs and pan-Africanism.
