Corvine Patterson was born the son of an enslaved mother named Lettie Patterson and father, slave owner Rice Patterson.
In 1872, he was elected to the Board of Education. He served two terms on the board. Patterson was also a Veteran of the Civil War. In 1899, Patterson was appointed the Street Commissioner, and later held the post of City Marshal and Deputy Sheriff. He was an active member of First Baptist Church. Patterson was part of the delegation to convince the School Board to name a new area school at that time, Sumner High School, instead of Manual Training School. He took a leading role in the establishment of Western University. Late in the 19th century, Patterson opened a cesspool and vault cleaning service, which he operated with his son-in-law, Ernest Gayden.
