Sumner viciously accused Andrew Butler of taking an ugly mistress (referring to slavery) during an anti-slavery address to the senate. Butler's kinsman, Preston Brooks, entered the senate's chamber after a meeting and began beating him unconscious with his own cane. They became heroes to both their causes overnight.
