Saint Paula was a member of a wealthy Senatorial family who lived a life of finery until her husband's death.

After learning of Saint Marcella she too took a vow of chastity and embraced monasticism.

After visiting many holy sites on a pilgrimage she settled in Bethlehem. While there she built and financed a large monastery for men and women.

Many international travelers would visit and stay there but it eventually became financially strained.
