The Encyclopedie, or A Systematic Dictionary of the Sciences, Arts and Crafts was a general encyclopedia that was published in France around 1752. It had many writers, known as “Encyclopedistes”. With over 28 volumes and 71,000 articles, it was one of the most intricately compiled works for the time period. The Encyclopedie was compiled and published by Denis Diderot, a French philosopher, art critic and writer. It had a major impact on life, as it essentially represents the ideas of the Enlightenment. The aim of the Encyclopedie was “to change the way that people think”. Some famous contributors to the Encyclopedie were Montesquieu, Voltaire and Rousseau. The topics discussed were so varied, it is commonly referred to as a book covering “everything from asparagus to zodiac”. It greatly contributed to the spreading of Enlightenment ideas in Europe.
