24 jun 1948 año - Stalin blockades Berlin
Descripción:
In June 1948, Stalin blocked all the major supply routes into the western side or Berlin. West Berlin was stranded deep behind Soviet lines with no access to food and supplies. If the West tried to destroy the blockades, it could be seen as an act of war.
WHY DID STALIN BLOCKADE BERLIN?
LONG TERM:
-Stalin saw Berlin as a threat because it was an area of western control within the Soviet Sphere of Influence. It would be an ideal place to launch an attack against the Soviets.
-It allowed the West to spy on Soviet activity behind the Iron curtain
-This gave Soviet troops control of who and what entered Berlin.
SHORT TERM:
-In 1947, the US and Britain joined their zones and France joined later on. Stalin felt that he was being ganged up on and forced out of Berlin.
-Due to Marshall aid, West Germany was beginning to recover
-In 1948 the west introduced a new currency but Stalin would not introduce it, he wanted control and power over his sector.
-Stalin was angry with the west for many reasons, he felt threatened by their presence in Berlin as it could limit or prevent his control. His ultimate aim was to force the western powers out of Berlin.
