After arriving to the America's in 1607, the Virginia company of London established the first English settlement, James fort. Jamestown started the Colonial American time period. Jamestown was the capital of Virginia for 83 years, from 1616 until 1699. The settlement was located within the Powhatan Confederacy. The indians initially welcomed the visitors and helped them with supplies. From 1609-1610 eighty percent of the colonists perished due to disease.
