14 feb 1981 año - Martial Law

Descripción:

The civil PM resigned and the leader of the army, Jaruzelski, took over.
Jaruzelski and Walsea initially tried to work together but they had too many differences between what they wanted to make it work. Brezhnev ordered military exercises on the Polish border and Jaruzelski introduced harsh martial (military) law. He shut down Solidarity and banned it, putting 10 000 leaders in prison.

WHY DID JARUZELSKI CRUSH SOLIDARITY?
-Solidarity was acting as a political party when all opposition against the communists was banned. The government claimed to have tapes of Solidarity meetings where they were trying to set up their own government.
-Inflation caused low increases in wages and the introduction of rationing. Unemployment was rising and Solidarity was with it. It was becoming too strong.
-Solidarity was in a state of crisis. Some groups wanted to completely overthrow the communist government but some saw that as too risky.
