Middle-class reforms took control over public education to start free schools. Horace Mann was the leader of the movement as the new secretary of the Massachusetts Board of Education. He called for compulsory attendance for all children, longer school year and increases teacher preparation. They wanted children to not just learn basic literay but also moral principles. The Second Great Awakening helped fuel private colleges.
