Due to revolutions and and famines in Europe and opportunities that the U.S had to offer there was a huge increase of immigrants from Europe. Ireland made up for more than half of all the immigrants with the remaining beng from Germany. Native-born Americans were alarmed by the increased immigration, they turned to politics and formed the Know-Nothing party.
