The Nihil novi constitution.

It substantially expanded the powers of the Senate and the magnates, at the expense of the king. Furthermore, it de facto introduced a republican form of government.

According to the constitution, both the senate (old royal council) and the chamber of deputies had to agree to pass any new decree ("Nic o nas bez nas").

The Chamber of Deputies (Izba Poselska) consisted of representatives of the nobility and the high clergy (initially also townspeople). Since the clergy was mostly recruited from the nobility, they became an overwhelming power.

The established system was known as demokracja szlachecka (szlachta democracy), the foundation for which was laid with the Priviledges of Nieszawa.
