The Barnburners, some members of the New York Democratic Convention, abandoned the party after the state did not endorse the Wilmot Proviso. They formed the Free Soil Party, which rallied against the expansion of slavery and the threat it would pose to white northern business interests. The Compromise of 1850 nearly dissolved the party, and its elements would later join the Whigs in forming the Republican Party, which would bring about the sectional two-party divide between pro-slavery Democrats and anti-slavery Republicans.
