Ragtime was when the white musicians used simplified elements of African American musical styles to spice up their performances. Ragtime was generally upbeat and had a fast tempo. This music had the defining characteristic of using a lot of syncopation in it. Syncopation is accenting or stressing an offbeat. Ragtime was often used as dance music.
