Officially, Reyes and Morrison are killed in a blast that destroys Overwatch's Swiss headquarters, an event the UN rules as an accident.

In reality, Overwatch has become split down the middle due to Reyes and Morrison's infighting, causing Reyes to lead a rebellion against Morrison's leadership.

As a battle wages within the base, their fighting triggers an explosion that destroys the facility, and apparently takes Reyes and Morrison into the inferno with it. Neither of their bodies are recovered.

As it turns out, both Morrison and Reyes survived. Reyes goes on to blame Morrison for what happened to him, and he correctly believes that he didn't perish in the blast either. He sets out on a personal crusade to find Morrison and finish what began in Switzerland.

Morrison, meanwhile, considers the blast the gault of his enemies, and reflects how they believe him dead. A truth, but in his mind, part of him did die on this day.
