Also known as the Shuttle Remote Manipulator System, the Canadarm is a large (15 meters), remote-controlled metal arm used on many missions. It could position astronauts, repair satellites, and move equipment. It served 30 years with NASA, but the Canadarm2 was inspired by it and is now used at the International Space Station.
