Sotelo was assassinated on July 12th, 1936 by the bodyguards of a socialist party leader by the name of Indalecio Prieto. Sotelo was often associated with the Falange party. He was also a deputy for the right-wing Spanish revival group. His assassination was very significant because it triggered the beginning of the military coup.
