The Astruian miners strike in 1934 was a crucial strike that initated a revolutionary uprising later on. Before the miners had gotten involved with the strike and fighting back, there general strike was called by the UGT (General Union of Workers). Many workers centres across Catalonia raided with hundreds of anarchist militants were being taken away by the police. Efforts to reopen union buildings by force in Barcelona were repelled by armed groups of escamots, the paramilitary youths of the Esquerra, Catalonia's leading nationalist party. As they were losing and the strike itself was falling apart, the Astruian miners had gathered up whatever arms they had and gotten involved with the strike. The night of the stirke the miners had come to town to occupy the peoples houses in order to attack and seize local and Civil assult guard barracks. They were so successful that the workers were able to take back the city by October 6th.
