11 ene 1933 año - The Casas Viejas massacre

Descripción:

It took place in a small province in Cadiz (Andalusia) in the town of Casas Viejas. This massacre left twenty one people dead which sparked an outrage against the revolutionary left. The workers who were part of the Confederación Nacional del Trabajo (CNT) had organized a protest march trying to begin a revolution. The government had responded on January eleven by sending assault guards to arrest the anarchist who were part of the attack on the Civil Guard barracks. Most of the people fled town in fear of being punished, but a small resistant group had hid in Curro Cruz’s, a devoted anarchist, home willing to fight back using any means necessary. A gunshot had gone off from inside of the hut striking and killing an Assault guard. In retaliation Captain Manuel Rojas ordered the guards to shoot the hut and burn down the hut killing everyone inside except a young woman and child. They also had 12 people executed and they had claimed that they were following the prime ministers orders. The Casas Viejas massacre led the Right and Left implementing their political advantage to attack the government. The massacre eventually led to Prime Minister Manuel Azaña’s forced resignation and a call for new elections in November 1933.
