In 1923, during a military dictatorship, Gen. Miguel Primo de Rivera took power. But the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera could not maintain order against a rising tide of war. Spain plunged into a severe economic recession when the Great Depression broke out in 1929 and the ruling class found it could no longer contain the growing anger with brute force. Primo de Rivera led a Mussolini inspired military coup with the help of King Alfonso XII. This caused rapid inflation and he lost the support of the army and resighned in 1930.
