The Popular Front was established by Manuel Azana as a coalition of parties on the political left to contest the elections in the following month. This consisted of the Socialists, Communists, Esquerra Party, and the Republican Union party, but not supported by Anarchists. Their platform included the restoration of Catalan autonomy, amnesty to policical prisoners, agrarian reform, and payment of damages caused by the 1934 revolt (included Asturian Miners' Strike of 1934). They were up against the National Front of right-wing groups (CEDA and Carlists), and won the general elections, which favoured the right wing to use violence in order to take power again.
