Although it crashed right before midnight on the 14th of April it finished sinking on the 15th of April at around 2:20 am. The titanic sank after it struck an iceberg and five of its hull compartments were ruptured. The bow sank and the stern reached an almost vertical position above the water, it than broke in half than both the stern and bow sank to the ocean floor. More than 1,500 of the 2,200 people either went down in the ship or froze in the icy water, unfortunately help didn’t come until an hour and 20 minutes later when Carpathia a Cunard liner. It was later discovered that less than 20 miles away was the Leyland liner Californian, but the ship didn’t hear the Titanic’s distress signals because the radio operator was off duty.

Aftermath and significance-

After the tragedy was announced both sides of the Atlantic were outraged and many rules to keep people safe were put in place as due to the accident the first International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea was held in 1913. These rules include enough lifeboat space for everyone on boat is required, lifeboat drills, iceberg monitoring and ships being made to keep a 24-hour radio watch.
