Written by Charles Dickens in 1838. Oliver Twist is a novel about a boy named Oliver Twist. He is born in the town of Portsea, in south-east England, both the mother (who died shortly after birth) and the father is unknown. Oliver is cared for in the poor house through the municipality's care, with great scarcity in diet and care. When Oliver asks for some more food one day, he ends up in jail. It is then decided that he will learn a profession by starting as an apprentice with a funeral contractor. There he likes quite well except that he is teased by other apprentices. After a fight with him, our protagonist escapes to London on foot.
