The Mackintosh Raincoat was a invention used in the Industrial Revolution. It was devised when Charles Mackintosh, prior to his invention of waterproofing clothing by using a coat of rubber. But the rubber would get sticky and tacky in hot weather and really stiff during the winter months. Charles, a Scottish chemist successfully solved this problem by patenting a new method of using rubber to waterproof clothing. His method of waterproofing is known as vulcanization. The process of allowing rubber to maintain it's shape and not become sticky in hot weather like natural rubber. His design also included placing the rubber inside two pieces of fabric rather than one.
