After the death of Stalin, and Eisenhower threatening the use of nuclear bombs, the communists agreed to settle. The ceasefire was signed on July 23, 1953, and is still in effect today. The cease-fire marked the end of the war despite no official treaty being signed. The Korean war led to a big change in the federal budget. Military spending now accounted for almost half of the budget.
