The House Committee on UN-American Activities investigated activities throughout American life. These were things such as academic institutions, labor unions, and city halls. During the Red Scare, they would be the ones who sentenced those suspected of Communism to jail. In 1947, they targeted the Hollywood Ten which was a group of left-wing writers, directors, and producers. They didn't testify against themselves and were sent to prison. Executives in the movie industry made blacklists naming entertainment figures suspected of communist ties, ruining careers. This also takes a toll on the culture of this time. Removing those who could have shaped the pop-culture.
