A patient died after suffering a massive immune response to a high dose of a viral vector. This showed that this method was not 100% safe, and proves the need for a safer and more effective method. This point was further emphasized by 5 other patients receiving this treatment in a therapeutic trial in the early 2000s developing leukemia (Doudna, 20-21).
