The Tokugawa Clan closed the country, meaning no one can get in and no one can get out. Only people who could get in were the Dutch, which they could only trade in a specific location, called Dejima. As a result of the country’s closing, the population dramatically increased to 30 million, expanded their business’, more schools were built, more roads were built, people learned to read, books were published, there was an era where art flourished, and they started to learn about European science, which they learned from the Dutch, until the U.S. came in 1853 and forcibly opened Japan.
