This marks the beginning of the neonatal period, which lasts approximately 13 days. The umbilical cord is severed, and the newborn's respiratory and circulatory systems need to be reconfigured. The circulatory system is stimulated by the collapse of umbilical blood vessels when the umbilical cord is cut. Infants undergo nonshivering thermoregulation. Gastrointestinal and urinary adjustments are made after birth.
