After the assassination of Mohammad-Ali Rajai, Ali Khamenei was elected president in 1981, and later became supreme leader in 1989. He is considered the most powerful political authority in the country. His reign is marked by many protests such as the Qazvin Protests and a fatwa issued in 2003.
