The Edict of Nantes was a religious document that was signed into law in 1598 by Henry IV of France. The document gave Huguenots limited right to worship, as long as they followed the terms disclosed in the edict. However, Huguenots were not allowed to practice Calvinism in French territory behind the mountains, in French courts, in Paris, or within 17.5 miles of Paris (five leagues). The edict also gave Huguenots the right to hold office and right to rule 200 French towns, but it still declared Catholicism as the official religion of France; and said that Huguenots had to support the Catholic Church financially. The Edict of Nantes appeased both Huguenots and Catholics, and experienced much success.
