Magellan was the first European to sail across the Pacific Ocean. He was a sailor for Portugal, and had important maps of the world. He was supported by Spain to start an expedition for the spice islands, but ended up finding a passage way between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, now called the Strait of Magellan.
