Desperate for work, the two become hopeful when a slightly-shady Communist propaganda newspaper is looking for a writer, Orwell's expertise. The two make the journey to the headquarters of the secret newspaper, and are offered a job after being forced to pay a 20 francs "entrance fee". They were both scammed blind.
