Physical Theatre originated in the Greek theatre of antiquity and in Italian Commedia dell’arte from as early as 1551. This developed Europe’s first independently organized theatre companies. Commedia dell'arte was performed outdoors in temporary venues by professional actors who were costumed and masked. At the end of the twentieth century, Jacques Lecoq was a key figure in the changing of attitude regarding what theatre is. It was proposed by Lecoq and his followers that the physical part of theatre is truly the encapsulating element, and that the text and speech delivery were not of as much importance (Murray, 2003).
