The Dutch East India Company was founded on March 20, 1602, and played a key part in the Dutch's success at the time. It was a highly profitable and powerful business that controlled the trade business with Asia and the East Indies, where the spices were. In fact, it was so successful and beneficial for the Dutch that it gained rights to wage war. It lasted for 197 years until it dissolved in 1799.
