This battle set Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia against Union General George McClellan’s Army of the Potomac. This was also one of the bloodiest battles in American history with over 23000 casualties. This battle is considered a victory for the Union. This was also a pivotal moment in the war as a major Confederate army was defeated.
