1 mar 1864 año - Case of Mary Ellen McCormack

Descripción:

Mary Ellen a young child born in March of 1864. Orphaned as an infant due to the death of her father Thomas Wilson. Mary's mother Frances attempted to support Mary and herself by working double shifts at the St. Nicholas hotel , while Frances was working she left Mary with a woman who lived on Mulberry lane, and charged Frances 2 dollars a week to care for Mary. This quickly used the money in her widows pension, soon after that Frances lost he job and could no longer afford to support Mary. Having no other choice Frances sent her daughter to an orphanage on Blackwell island. After spending a few years at the orphanage she was adopted by Thomas and Mary McCormack of Manhattan. Mary Ellen's adoptive father Thomas passed away not long after Mary was adopted. Mary's adopted mother remarried and was unhappy and stressed. as a way to release her anger she took to beating her daughter. In late 1873 the neighbors noticed the state of Mary Ellen, and complained to the Department of Public Charities and Corrections which caused an official investigator named Etta Angell Wheeler, annoyed by the lack of laws to protect children like Mary. Etta wheeler explained what was happening to Mary, to the founder of the A.S.P.C.A who in turn recruited a lawyer who brought the case the the NYSSC(New York State Supreme Court). Mary Connolly was charged with multiple accounts of assault and battery. After that Mary Ellen never returned to the home of her adopted mother, and lived in a home for delinquent teens , until Etta wheeler adopted her and raised her with love and care until Mary was an adult.
