"One evening, Jack went out to meet some friends, leaving his tunic hanging in their room with a letter addressed in a woman's handwriting protruding from the pocket. Polly took out the letter and opened it. It began, 'Dearest Jack." Polly fell into a chair, shakily spreading the letter open on her lap" (57).

While alone in her house, Polly spots a letter in John's coat pocket. She opens it up to read "Dearest Jack...".
Polly is terrified of this letter, and suspicious to see what John thinks of it. Is this girl crazy? Or has Jack been sneaking around with her this whole time?
Polly goes to confront John about the letter, but he assures her that it is not a mutal relationship. He lies to Polly, telling her that Jessie is crazy and obsessed with him, and that Jack has no feelings towards her.
Little does Polly know, Jessie and John's relationship is a much bigger problem that John is letting on.
