The flood of 1993 devastated many areas but Kansas City, Kansas survived relatively well due to improvements in the state that took place during the Governorship of Edward F. Arn (1951-1955) who graduated from Kansas City Kansas Junior College in 1927. Arn had launched the state dams and levee system that was constructed over the next twenty years. As Governor he was the founder of the state Veterans Commission. Arn served in the Navy at Iwo Jima.
