In 1981, a new innovation came to space travel. After 12 years, the first shuttle (a reusable spacecraft that glides back down to Earth) was launched. The shuttle was used for 27 missions over 22 years until it tragically disintegrated in re-entry, killing the seven astronauts onboard.
