With enrollment in McKeesport Public Schools on the rise, the growth has prompted an need for school expansion. The School Board proposed a $31 million dollar expansion and renovation project in an effort to maintain high enrollments. With the still mills closing and declining populations in the 1980s Monogahela River towns welcome the jump in enrollment. Making budget proposals a large selling point for officials running for school board positions.
