The attack on Pearl Harbor was a Japanese surprise attack on the American base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on Sunday morning, December 7, 1941, during World War II. During this time, Pearl Harbor is the United States Naval Base in the Pacific. The attack was carried out by Japanese Imperial Navy planes taking off from aircraft carriers. At 7:55 a.m., Mitsu Pushida, the leading Japanese pilot, gave the signal to the attack as he read about "Torre, Torre, Torre." The attack on Pearl Harbor was burned in the American consciousness as a national calamity event, to be remembered for a glimpse into the world, and is considered the greatest intelligence failure in American history, until the terrorist attack on the Twin Towers in New York. The attack on Pearl Harbor prompted the entry of the United States into World War II which led to Japan's defeat.
