As persecution from the Jewish high priests towards the Christians grows, Stephen is arrested and placed on trial. He recounts the story of Israel's rebellious history and how it culminated in the crucifixion of Jesus at their hands. He states that the only chance for salvation is to place their faith in the One they killed. They respond by dragging Stephen out of the city and stoning him, which sparked such drastic persecution of the Church in Jerusalem that many of the Christians spread to other parts of the empire, bringing the Gospel with them.
