5 feb 1809 año - Burning Of Washington D.C

Descripción:

Description: On August 24, 1814, British forces marched unopposed in Washington D.C, burning the White House, the Capitol, and other government buildings. Attempts were made to gather a militia to defend the district, but the forces were simply not strong enough.

Significance: This event served as a wake-up call to Americans. After this event, individuals of all social classes lost faith and trust in the American government and military. There was a sense of hopelessness, and a disconnect between the government and the people. Something was necessary to revive that trust in the government, and to provide a renewed sense of motivation and momentum among the individuals in American society in support of the war effort. Madison was successfully able to do this through his speech to a special session of Congress.
