For most of the Medieval era, the clergy engaged in debauchery whilst heavily taxing parishioners and asking for "indulgences" as a way to pay your way straight into heaven. The citizens had no other choice but to pay as the clergy were the only link of communication between them and God. But in 1517, Martin Luther realized how corrupt the system was and that he believed that individuals should manage their own relationship with God, and so, he posted his 95 Theses on the door of Castle Church in Wittenberg, beginning the Reformation of the Christian faith, the creation of the Protestant denomination and the beginning of many bloodbaths that would be shed in the name of converting the opposition to the "correct" way of worship.
